Safety & Legal Requirements

When towing a caravan in Australia, it’s essential to comply with national and state-specific laws to ensure safety and legal compliance. Here are the key legal requirements you need to be aware of:

1. Tow Vehicle Driver Licence

  • You must hold a valid driver’s licence suitable for your tow vehicle.
  • Heavier vehicles may require a different licence class.
  • Check licensing requirements with your state or territory’s transport authority.

2. Speed Limits for Towing

  • Always follow the speed limits for towing, often different from regular vehicles.
  • Maximum 100 km/h is a common legal limit for towing, and may also be marked on your VIN plate.
  • Speed limits vary by state — check before you travel.

3. Safety Chains

  • Safety chains are required by law to prevent full detachment if the tow hitch fails.
  • Chains must:
    • Be properly connected between the caravan and tow vehicle.
    • Meet legal strength and fitting requirements.

4. Lights and Indicators

  • All caravan and tow vehicle lights must be fully operational:
    • Brake lights
    • Indicators
    • Tail lights
    • Headlights
  • Test regularly and repair faults immediately to maintain road compliance and visibility.

5. Number Plates and Registration

  • Both the tow vehicle and caravan must have:
    • Valid registration
    • Clearly visible and properly mounted number plates
  • Registration must comply with the laws of the state/territory of registration.
  • Non-compliance can result in fines or insurance voidance.

6. Breakaway System (Required Over 2,000 kg GTM)

  • Caravans with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) over 2,000 kg must be fitted with a breakaway system.
  • This system automatically applies the caravan brakes if it disconnects from the tow vehicle.
  • Check that your system:
    • Is legally compliant
    • Is regularly tested and maintained

7. Weight Limits

  • Always stay within:
    • Towing capacity of your vehicle
    • ATMGTM, and GCM limits (see compliance plate)
    • Axle loadheight, and length restrictions
  • Overloading is not only illegal — it’s dangerous.
  • Weigh your fully loaded van and distribute the load evenly before each trip.

8. Trailer Brakes (Required Over 750 kg)

  • Caravans over 750 kg GTM must have electric or hydraulic brakes.
  • Brakes must be:
    • Fitted and working
    • Properly adjusted for towing
    • Serviced regularly according to manufacturer guidelines

Important Note:

Legal requirements may vary slightly between Australian states and territories. Always refer to the official government road authority in your area before towing.
